Percentage Calculator

Find a percentage of a value or calculate percentage change.

A percentage is a part divided by a whole, multiplied by 100. On this page, enter the part and the whole. If the whole is greater than zero, CalculatorX returns (part ÷ whole) × 100, shown to two decimal places.

Formula

Percentage = (part / whole) × 100

Example

25% of 200 = 50

A glass circle with one wedge lifted out, suggesting a percentage of a whole.
Illustration only. Use the formula and the result box for the number.

How do you calculate a percentage of a whole?

Divide the part by the whole, then multiply by 100. Fifty out of 200 is (50 ÷ 200) × 100, which is 25%.

The live calculator uses the Part and Whole fields. A whole of zero is rejected because division by zero is undefined.

This is not the same as “25% of 200”. That question starts from the percent and finds the part: 0.25 × 200 = 50. This page starts from the part and the whole and finds the percent.

How is a percentage different from a discount or GST?

A percentage here is a ratio. A discount calculator removes a percent from a price. A GST calculator adds a percent on top of a base amount. The same percent sign is used, but the operation is different.

Use this page when the question is “what percent is this part of that whole?” Use the discount or GST page when the question is about a price before or after a rate.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the part. This is the piece you want to express as a percent, such as 50 out of a larger amount.
  2. Enter the whole. This is the base. It must be greater than zero or the page cannot divide.
  3. Read the percent. The result is the part as a percent of the whole, not a rupee amount and not a discount price.

Questions about Percentage Calculator

What if the part is larger than the whole?

The result can be more than 100%. That is a valid ratio. It means the part is larger than the base you entered.

How many decimal places are shown?

The page shows two decimal places, so 1 out of 3 is 33.33%, not the full repeating fraction.

Can I find a percent change here?

Not as a separate increase-or-decrease mode. Put the change in Part and the original amount in Whole if you want the change as a percent of the original.

Why does the form also show Value and Base?

Those labels are on the page, but the browser calculation uses Part and Whole. Enter those two if you want the percent shown in the result.

Read the guide

A percentage on CalculatorX is part ÷ whole × 100. A discount is price × rate ÷ 100, subtracted from the price. A unit conversion applies one known factor, and only for kilometre/mile, metre/kilometre, kilogram/pound, and Celsius/Fahrenheit. Using the wrong page produces a confident number for a different question.

What this helps you do

  • Estimate Percentage from the inputs you already have.
  • Check the result against the formula and the worked example.
  • Change one value at a time and compare the new estimate.

Limits to keep in mind

  • The figure is only as complete as the inputs on this form.
  • Rounding, fees, and local rules can change the real-world number.
  • Use it to learn and compare. Confirm important finance or health decisions with a qualified professional.
